Ministry in Action Good News

Summer 2010

SAUMC parishioners have been busy helping others...

Pajama Program
We have just finished collecting new pajamas and books for the Akron Chapter of the Pajama Program.  These pajamas sets are then given to local agencies that work with young children who are removed from homes suddenly in a crisis situation. Examples of such agencies are Battered Women's Shelter, Safe Landing, ACCESS, etc.

Lions Club Eye Glasses, Cell Phone Collections, Pop Tabs, and Food Pantry & Free Lunch Program
We are always collecting used eye classes (adult and children) for the Lions Club.  They have doctors who fix and clean glasses and determine the prescription and ready them for mission teams going out of the country, as well as for children in our own area.

We collect old cell phones for OPERATION CELLPHONE for Soldiers.  the phones are recycled and the money then is used to purchase phone cards for chaplains in various military units to give to soldiers so they can call home.

We collect pop tabs which will be given to Children's Hospital for them to recycle and then purchase items for the children in the burn unit of the hospital.

We have an emergency food pantry where we are able to give out food to tie over a family for a day or two. We collect personal hygiene items and put together bags of needed items for the homeless.  The first Sunday of each month we bake homemade cookies for distribution by New Exodus church with their dinners.

We also have a free lunch program for the children living in the neighborhood.  Working with the city we are a host site for the summer lunches to be served Monday-Friday at noon.

Linda Hodgen-January 2010

"Linda was raised in the church but left it after her formative years.  The Lord has led her back to serve in caring for the needs of the older and shut-in members by visiting and providing Communion.  Linda's occupation serves the needs of the development and mentally disabled. Her love is expressed by her broad smile and bright spirit when she's about the Lord's business." - Nominated by Dee Paul
