What is the Stork's Nest?
The Stork's Nest is a nationwide prenatal and parenting education program created by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated. In 1972, Zeta combined their strengths in community service with the March of Dimes' strengths in preserving maternal and infant health to further enhance the program. The goal of the program is to encourage women to seek prenatal care within the first trimester of pregnancy, thereby decreasing the risk of birth defects and infant mortality. The Akron Stork's Nest was founded in 1997 by a member of the local Zeta. She worked with the Northeast Ohio Chapter of the March of Dimes, Saint Paul's A.M.E. Church, Akron Children's Hospital and many other cooperating, local community agencies. The program's newest partner is the South Arlington United Methodist Church where the program currently resides.
The program has three major objectives:
-
To provide prenatal education and incentives (free baby clothes, extra points, etc.) to low income pregnant women (although the Akron chapter opens its doors to the entire community);
- To motivate women to get early, regular prenatal care through earned incentives;
- and to educate women and families on proper care during pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum and newborn care.
